Accreditation

Reprint from the Camilla Enterprise, September 2000.

Optioncare, operated by pharmacist Harris Morgan has been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organizations, achieving the highest score the Camilla company has ever had.

Optioncare, which provides IV fusion services, is believed to be the first pharmacy to move into the home care pharmacy business in Southwest Georgia, Morgan said.  His business covers 21 counties in southwest Georgia, in approximately a 65 mile radius of Camilla.

The company scored a 99 percent on its accreditation this year, he said. "That's the best accreditation we've done... Only 5 percent of home care agencies in the country get accredited 99 percent, " he said.

The company is re accredited every three years. The company provides many different services in patients' homes: flu shots, chemotherapy, drugs for AIDS patients and dialysis patients, antibiotic therapy, intravenous feeding for people who can't take food through their digestive system.

Morgan founded the company in 1986.  He said its success should be "credited to the staff that makes it work."  They work long hours and travel great distances to care for patients, he said.

The accreditation process "gives you a benchmark to see how you're doing against everybody else in the industry, and it standardizes care across the country," he said.

Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation's health care through voluntary accreditation, according to information proviced by the Joint Commission.

It is an independent, not-for-profit organization. It evaluates and accredits almost 12,000 hospitals and home care agencies and more than 7,000 other health care organizations. It standards of quality are developed in collaboration with health professionals and others.

Morgan is president and operation manager of the company.  Staff members are staff Pharmacist Joe McGalliard, Registered Nurse Ragan Pollock, Marketing Director Cara Tyson, Administrator Lynn Sanders, Purchasing Director Joyce Sheperd, and Director of Nursing Christi Dixon.
